Things to do in Barcelona before a cruise

See some Gaudí architecture – Sagrada Família

Start your day with some Gaudí architecture. Sagrada Família is the most famous of all the sites in Barcelona, and definitely the Gaudí piece to see on a short visit to the city.

This extraordinary basilica has been under construction since 1882 and is due to be finished in 2026. Its unique mix of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles, intricate façades, and towering spires make it one of the most distinctive churches in the world. Inside, colorful stained glass fills the vast interior with light, creating a serene, almost otherworldly atmosphere.

Access is via timed ticket, so book in advance – download the audio guide before you go for the best experience. We took a guided tour, and the knowledge of the tour guide was fantastic.

Exploring the Gothic Quarter

Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is the perfect place to head for a wander before lunch. Start at Plaça de Catalunya and stroll down into the medieval streets, heading toward the impressive Barcelona Cathedral. Take time to explore its square and admire the Gothic architecture, then continue through the winding lanes to Plaça del Pi, a charming square known for its artisan markets and the striking Santa Maria del Pi church.

Carrer del Bisbe offers a great photo spot with its neo-Gothic bridge over the alleyway, leading toward Plaça Sant Jaume. Just a few steps further you’ll find Palau Reial, once home to Spanish monarchs and now a quiet corner perfect for soaking in the historic atmosphere.

Finish your walk at Plaça Reial, where palm trees and wrought-iron balconies surround bustling cafés. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed drink or light lunch.

If you’d prefer more structure, consider a small-group walking tour or a Gothic Quarter and tapas tour for added insight.

Shopping and Souvenirs – La Rambla and the Boqueria Market

La Rambla is one of Barcelona’s most famous streets, stretching from Plaça de Catalunya down to the Columbus Monument near the port. We found it to be way too touristy and busy to enjoy properly, but you can pop along a section of it from the Gothic Quarter easily.

We visited the Boqueria Market as part of our Paella Cooking Tour, and although it was busy, it’s an amazing market to visit. Especially if you prefer to picnic than eat at a restaurant.

Where to Eat Before You Sail – Tapas and Catalan Cuisine

Spend the afternoon either at a Paella cooking class, a tapas tour, or taking a boat ride with a seafood dinner. There are lots of guided tour options, so pick something that takes in the wider parts of Barcelona!

While we only had about 36 hours in Barcelona, we managed to squeeze in a LOT of eating! Aside from our paella class and boat tour, we enjoyed tapas on Plaça del Pi, with a lovely glass of sangria and watching the buzz of life in this colourful city.

If you can extend your stay in Barcelona, add a visit to Parc Güell and the other Gaudí buildings. Or a visit out to the Monastery at Montserrat.

Getting to the Cruise Port – Transport Tips and Tricks

Port de Barcelona, is one of the busiest in Europe and conveniently located near the city center. Most cruise ships dock at the Moll Adossat terminal, which is a short distance from popular landmarks like La Rambla and the Columbus Monument.

Here’s how to get there smoothly:

From the Airport (Barcelona El Prat – BCN)

Taxi – The easiest option. The ride from the airport to the cruise port takes about 20–30 minutes and costs approximately €35–€45, including luggage and port fees.
Private Transfer – Pre-booked transfers are ideal for groups or families and often include luggage assistance. Many companies offer door-to-ship service.
Aerobus + Port Shuttle – Take the Aerobus from the airport to Plaça Catalunya or Plaça Espanya, then hop in a taxi or shuttle to the cruise terminal.
Metro + Bus – Less convenient with luggage, but budget-friendly. Take L9 Sud to Zona Universitària, transfer to L3 to Drassanes, then walk or take a port shuttle.

From the City Center

Taxi – Readily available and convenient. A ride from La Rambla or the Gothic Quarter will take 10–15 minutes and cost around €10–€15.
Port Shuttle (Blue Bus) – Known as the Cruise Bus, this service runs between the Columbus Monument (Mirador de Colom) and the cruise terminals. It’s inexpensive (around €3 one way) and ideal for cruise passengers.
Walking – Only recommended if you’re traveling light and your ship is docked near the World Trade Center terminals (not Moll Adossat).

Helpful Tips

Naturally, we suggest staying 1-2 days in Barcelona before your cruise, this gives you time to see some of the city and leave time to transfer to the cruise port at a relaxed pace
Always check which terminal your cruise uses — Moll Adossat (A-D) is farther and usually requires transport
Arrive early to avoid traffic delays, especially on weekends
If staying overnight in Barcelona before your cruise, choose a hotel with cruise shuttle service or near Plaça de Catalunya or Drassanes for easy access

Tips for a Smooth Pre-Cruise Day in Barcelona

Wear comfortable shoes, as much of the city is best explored on foot.
If your cruise departs the next day, be sure to confirm boarding times and pre-book transport to the port.
Keep luggage light or store it at your hotel or a luggage facility so you can enjoy your day unencumbered.
Finally, while we didn’t have any issues with pickpockets in Barcelona, we always pay attention in big crowded cities (like any US city too).

What to Pack for Your Day in Barcelona

For a comfortable and enjoyable day exploring Barcelona before your cruise, pack with versatility and the city’s Mediterranean climate in mind.

Small pack of tissues or wipes – Useful for quick cleanups or in case public restrooms lack supplies.
Comfortable walking shoes – You’ll likely be on your feet much of the day, it’s a very pedestrian-friendly city!
Light layers – Weather can vary, especially in spring and fall. A lightweight jacket or sweater is useful in the morning or evening.
Sun protection – Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat are essential for sunny days.
Reusable water bottle – Stay hydrated while walking the city; many public fountains have clean drinking water.
Portable phone charger – You’ll be using your phone for maps, photos, and tickets, so backup power is helpful.
