Taking a Paella Cooking Class in Barcelona

We love taking cooking classes while we are traveling, it is a great way to indulge in both the learning side of travel and our love of food. We didn’t have a lot of time in Spain before our cruise to the Italian Riviera, but we managed to squeeze in a Paella cooking class in Barcelona. While Paella didn’t originate in Barcelona, but rather Valencia, we were glad to get a chance to cook it and try it!

Learning the Secrets of Authentic Paella

Paella hails from Valencia, Spain, and dates back to the mid-19th century. Originating in the rural areas around Albufera lagoon, it was a dish made by farmers using available ingredients like rice, vegetables, rabbit, chicken and even sometimes snails!

The name ‘paella’ comes from the wide, shallow pan used for cooking. Over the years, this dish has spread across Spain, with each region adding its twist. Seafood paella is a coastal favorite, but the traditional Paella Valenciana remains the most authentic.

We made a beautiful seafood version, since we were right on the Catalonian coast.

What to Expect from your Paella Cooking Class

There were approximately 12-15 people taking part in this class. Personally, I prefer smaller groups, like the one we experienced in Sardinia, but this did not stop our enjoyment of the class.

After introductions we made our way into the kitchen. There was also a bar area with free flowing wine and Sangria. Our chef explained everything, provided history along the way, and assigned everyone a task.

We even learned how to clean the shrimp properly using a toothpick. Many in our group have cleaned shrimp before but this technique was so easy. After the meal was complete, the chef prepared a plate for each of us that we took back to the dining room to feast upon.

Exploring Barcelona’s Markets for Fresh Ingredients

Depending on the class, you may have the opportunity to visit a local market. You’ll select the freshest seafood, vegetables, meats, and other ingredients for the dish. The markets of Barcelona, such as La Boqueria, are famous for their variety and freshness. If you can, adding this aspect of a cooking class is one of the most memorable parts of the experience.

Step-by-Step Paella Preparation Process

The chefs will walk you through each step, from preparing the sofrito (a base of tomatoes, garlic, and onions) to selecting the perfect rice and learning how to layer the ingredients for the best flavor.

In Spain, bomba rice or Calasparra rice is used for its ability to absorb liquid while staying firm. You’ll learn how to toast the rice lightly before adding the stock. Usually made from fish or shellfish for seafood paella, or chicken and rabbit for more traditional Valencian versions.

You’ll be instructed on the correct balance of seasoning and how to achieve the prized socarrat—the crispy, caramelized layer of rice at the bottom of the pan that is a hallmark of well-cooked paella.

Everyone is involved – from the chopping to the cooking, and then of course, the eating!

Enjoying the Finished Dish

Once the cooking is done, it’s time to sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Most paella cooking classes end with a shared meal, often paired with a glass of local wine.

It was a moment to savor for us… not just for the delicious food, but also because the experience of learning and cooking together is always wonderful.

Best Paella Cooking Classes in Barcelona

There are lots of paella cooking classes available in Barcelona. They vary depending on what is included, the length of the course, and the number of people. Always choose one with a high rating and recent positive reviews.

In hindsight, the only thing we would’ve changed is to have chosen a smaller group or private tour. If you’re travelling with a group, a private tour can be a comparable price and far more enjoyable.

Other tours to do in Barcelona before a cruise

We only had 1.5 days in Barcelona, and crammed in as much as possible. Here are the other tours we did before embarking on our cruise on the Celebrity Ascent.

If you have time, stay a few days in Barcelona to explore the center of town, the Gothic Quarter, Montjuic and the many examples of Gaudí’s architecture.

Review of our Cooking Class in Barcelona

We really enjoyed this cooking class. Especially since we had family and friends taking part in the experience with us. I would have preferred a smaller group size but it was manageable and still fun. The food was incredible and the chef was very knowledgable and humorous. As always, cooking food from a particular region is one of our favorite things to do when traveling.
