The Best Places To Eat in Helen GA

Cowboys and Angels

Cowboys and Angels Restaurant and Bar provides a fun and friendly atmosphere in downtown Helen. The restaurant provides indoor, outdoor and bar seating and the staff provides warm southern hospitality.

Their specials include Bourbon Street crab cakes, fried green tomatoes, smoked Gouda pimento cheese, speciality burgers, steaks and more. My personal favorite is the avocado burger and fries which are the best I have ever had.

Brunch is served on Sundays from 10am until 1pm featuring Bloody Marys, mimosas and the quiche of the day. Wednesday’s are known as wild game Wednesday and include such treats as ostrich, gator, crawfish, bison and more. There is often live music and drink specials as well during the week.

Paul’s Steakhouse

Paul’s Steakhouse is a traditional steakhouse and has been serving Helen for over 50 years. Their restaurant provides a family friendly atmosphere and is perfect for date night. Our personal favorite is the surf and turf featuring filet mignon and lobster. The extensive menu provides a vast selection of seafood and steak options and a kids menu as well. The views of the Chattahoochee River provide the perfect setting for dinner.

Located just behind the restaurant (and also along the river) is Paul’s Margarita Deck, the largest outdoor deck on the river. The menu on the deck is American classic food and tasty margarita’s (along with other drink specialities). The deck is the perfect location to watch the tubers float by on the river. There are also multiple big screen TV’s for watching the games and live entertainment on the weekends.

Valhalla Resort (Sky Bar or Caledonia dining room)

Valhalla Resort is the only adult only resort in Helen. In addition to spa and golf, the gated resort offers 4 dining options. The Abbey Wine Cellar provides private diners inside the wine room for a unique dining experience. The Staghorn Grill offers quick bites served with a view for the golfers on the course. For a romantic and upscale dining experience the best choice would be the Caledonia dining room. Here you will find breakfast, lunch and a seasonal brunch serving Southern classics with a modern makeover.

The fourth choice at Valhalla is the Sky Bar – a great place for a romantic meal in the mountains. Located on the fourth floor of the resort this restaurant offers brilliant vistas of the Innsbruck Golf Club and Blue Ridge Mountains. Serving lunch, dinner and drinks the food is as satisfying as the view. The best time to visit is for a sunset dinner. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind after a busy day in Helen.

Cafe International

Cafe International is our favorite place for lunch when visiting Helen. The outdoor seating overlooking the Chattahoochee River provides the perfect place to enjoy lunch and catch a view of the tubers floating by. The entertainment makes the meal that much better.

Offering Italian, German and American speciality sandwiches there is something for every palate. Payton loves to start off with the Bavarian pretzel followed by the Reuben sandwich. They say it is the best Reuben in town but I would have to say that it is the best in the state.

Muller’s Famous Fried Cheese Cafe

If you love cheese you must visit Muller’s Famous Fried Cheese Cafe. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, brunch and early dinners. Along with their famous sandwiches, appetizers and desserts they also provide German and Czech specialities.

Payton loves the fried cheese sandwich. John and I prefer to share one of the German Schnitzel platters such as the Jaeger Schnitzel or the Holsteiner Schnitzel. If the menu is confusing to you the staff is more than happy to make recommendations. You cant go wrong with any of the selections.

Bodensee

If you are looking for an authentic German experience Bodensee Restaurant is the place to go. Chef Aurel Prodan attended culinary school in Romania and then continued his career in Bavaria, German. From there he and his wife moved to Baden-Wuerttemberg (Schwabenland) where he became a renowned Master Chef.

Today the couple brings “Old World Germany” to Georgia’s famous Alpine village. We have 2 favorites on the menu that we highly recommend: The wurst sampler platter the sampler platter for 2 which includes Sauerbraten, Schweinibraten, beef roll, smoked pork chop, homemade garlic sausage, served with Spaetzle, Sauerkraut, red cabbage and German potato salad. Either of these options provide a sample of many items in case you have trouble just choosing one.

Mully’s Nacoochee Grill (brunch)

Mully’s Nacoochee Grill is one of the best places for brunch in Helen GA. The restaurant is located inside a charming old home providing a cozy atmosphere.

Their menu features all of the southern classics along with specialities of their own. The shrimp and grits paired with a spicy Bloody Mary from the bar has to be my favorite.

They are located on Main Street just south of the Helen city limits and only 2 minutes from Habersham Winery. A perfect meal before the next wine tasting.

Sylvan Valley Lodge

Sylvan Valley Lodge is our favorite bed and breakfast in the Helen area. The hearty breakfast is the perfect start to a day full of outdoor adventures or wine tastings in the area.

In the past we have enjoyed gourmet private dinners with wine pairings at the lodge. Therefore, we are very excited that they have recently announced they will be opening a full restaurant on site next month.

We cant wait to give it a try when we take our next group trip on the wine trail in North Georgia.

Chattahoochee Cheese Market (take out, box meals, picnics, etc)

The Chattahoochee Cheese Market is our top choice for take out in Helen. The box lunches are perfect for picnics while hiking or exploring waterfalls. The charcuterie boards pair perfectly with any of the local wine tastings.

The market also includes a full espresso bar and is stocked full of local wines, craft beer and unique gifts. When staying at one of the local cabin rentals we always stock up here first for our stay.

Located just north of the Helen city limits. Charcuterie boards and box lunches can also be delivered to any of the local wineries for your convenience.

    • We don’t have any food intolerances, so don’t tend to look for these. However, there are lots of restaurant options, so I’m sure you’ll have no trouble finding gluten free items. Have a great vacation!
