Greece is one of the most history-rich places we have ever visited. Thousands of years of legends, stories, and ruins can be experienced there. And Kalamata is no exception. We spent an amazing and peaceful week there, and one of our favorite activities was The Olive Routes Tour. Taking a Kalamata olive tour is a fantastic thing to do while you’re in Greece.
About Kalamata
Kalamata is located in southern Greece, in the Peloponnese peninsula, and is the country’s second most populous city. It is not a major metropolis like Athens. It is a quaint little area right on the ocean where you can walk to anywhere. There are so many restaurants to choose from, further inland or on the seaside. And walking up and down the beach, watching everybody take their time, is an experience by itself.
How to get to Kalamata
After landing at the Eleftherios Venizelos Athens International Airport (ATH) in Athens, we took a three-hour bus ride to Kalamata. The distance from the airport to Kalamata is 128 miles (206 kilometers), and you can either take the bus as we did, or hire a car.
We recommend a few days in Athens before or after, because you can’t visit Greece without visiting the Acropolis and Parthenon.
The History of Olive Growing in Kalamata
The Mediterranean climate and soil conditions of this area are ideal to support olive cultivation. Kalamata olives, a large, dark variety, are the region’s most famous product.
Olive oil has been central to the local economy for generations, with production methods evolving over time. Archaeological evidence suggests olive cultivation in the region dates back to at least 1500 BCE. While traditional practices persist, modern techniques have been adopted to meet international quality standards.
Kalamata olive oil is exported globally and valued for its flavor profile and nutritional properties, though specific health claims should be verified through scientific research.
The area is part of the “Routes of the Olive Tree,” a cultural route recognized by the Council of Europe, which connects olive-producing regions across the Mediterranean, highlighting their shared cultural heritage.

In Greece, olive oil isn’t just a condiment. It is a way of life. Babies are often covered in olive oil as a ceremonial practice. As such, creating it is a thoughtful process, with fascinating science behind it.
The Olive Routes of Kalamata tour took us through the factory where the olive oil it is made. We learned all about how it is pressed and bottled, the difference between virgin and extra virgin, and so much more. We also saw the olive trees, along with panoramic views.
At the end, we got to drink various olive oils and learn about the differences, in addition to tasting them on snacks.
Local Guides
We enjoyed every minute of this tour, and not only because of the history. Our guide was a local, very friendly and informative, and all the others on the tour were respectful. Which isn’t always the way, after rude tour guests ruined our cultural tour in New Zealand by not listening!
This tour in Kalamata was definitely a peaceful experience. We all got to immerse ourselves in the culture of Greece and learn about one of the tastiest products we’ve tried in a while.
Pick up a souvenir
You can’t leave Kalamata without buying a souvenir or two. We brought home some Kalamata olives in olive oil, and some extra virgin olive oil, both of which we tried during our tasting.
These products were appreciated by John and the rest of our family when we returned to the USA. The quality and taste was unlike products you get in the supermarkets, as it is all small batch product.
Dining Out in Kalamata
Beyond the olive groves and mills, don’t forget to visit the local markets, traditional tavernas, and historic sites. Exploring the local markets gives you a glimpse of the vibrant food culture in Kalamata, where olives and olive oil take center stage.
In the tavernas, you can savor dishes that highlight the versatility of Kalamata olives and olive oil, from simple salads drizzled with extra virgin olive oil to hearty stews enriched with the olives’ deep flavors, and even desserts!
