As a traveling and homeschooling family we teach our daughter through curriculum, hands on experiences, and with the help of the occasional monthly homeschool subscription. Travel and Homeschooling
In the past two years we visited numerous museums and aquariums in Chicago, New York City, and Charleston. As a family we toured historical military sites and our Nation’s Capitol during an east coast road trip. We explored weather and seasons as we traveled through Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Kentucky, and Tennessee on a 3K mile fall foliage road trip. We even cruised the Caribbean and learned about the ocean and other countries along the way.
And then COVID brought everything to a halt. Especially travel. However, we still must homeschool and learn. Our First Homeschool Kit : Thailand
Quick facts
The first section introduced us to Thailand. We learned about the history of the country. We discovered facts on the population, religion, national symbols, language, and culture. Beautiful photos were included to bring the virtual trip to life.
Recipes
The next section included a recipe from Thailand. I have to be honest. This was the section I was looking forward to the most. We are foodies and absolutely love Thai food. As a family, we created Thai Panang Chicken Curry in the comfort of our home following the instructions included in the kit. The recipe was easy to follow and delicious.
Movie Recommendations
After dinner, with the recommendation of our kit, we watched the movie The King and I. Payton and her best friend really enjoyed this movie. It is not one we would have chosen if not for the recommendation. The movie was produced in 1956 and is suitable for all ages. It is a true story about an English school teacher that is hired to teach the multitude of children for the King of Siam (modern day Thailand). There were many cultural clashes throughout the movie that provided learning moments for the girls.
I love that the movie really draws focus on understanding each other despite our differences. Isn’t that why we want to travel the world in the first place?
Travels with the Crew
Book Recommendations
Our daughter is an avid reader so she was excited about this section. It included book recommendations that could be downloaded or ordered online. I appreciated the fact that there were multiple recommended books based on reading level. Again, this subscription can be utilized by any age level. Payton chose the book The Bridge Over the River Kwai. We will have to update the post after she has had time to read it.
Learn a dance
The next section, how else can you travel to Thailand from home, included multiple videos. The girls favorite was trying to learn a traditional dance from Thailand. However, there is no way they will allow me to post the video of them trying online. They watched the video over and over trying to recreate the dance in our home. There were also nursery rhyme songs/videos for the younger kids and national geographic videos for all ages.
Craft project
Arts and crafts projects are fun for kids of all ages and great for sparking creativity. The craft project for Thailand included easy to follow instructions and video tutorials. Supplies needed for the project were listed at the beginning to ensure availability. Everything we needed could easily be found in our home without the need to purchase additional items. This was a bonus for sure. The girls enjoyed the craft. On the other hand, I discovered that I can not draw an elephant.
Music
Our family loves music of any kind and discovering different types of music. Payton has actually learned other languages through music with k-pop being her current favorite. The music shared was a nice addition to the kit. It was good to listen to music from Thailand while enjoying the Thai dinner and creating the Thai craft. It was an addition that I was not expecting.
Blog links for further learning
The final section on our series from Thailand included blog links to people who have actually visited the country. This was the perfect ending to the multiple activities we had enjoyed thus far. Thailand has been on our bucket list for a couple of years now. It is somewhere we hope to visit as soon as the time is right again. Until then it was nice to travel virtually with other bloggers. It also provided us the chance to add more stops to our itinerary for when we make it there.

Could you find this information online yourself for your children? More than likely. However, considering the minimal cost, why not choose the one packaged together for you. Travel is a form of learning. While we cannot do the travel we like nowadays, this is a great way to learn still.
