Frontier Culture Museum – Bringing the Past to Life

We love to teach history “hands on” as much as possible.  And what better way to bring the past to life than at the Frontier Culture Museum.  This interactive museum teaches you all about Frontier times here in Staunton, Virginia. This is a perfect place to teach your kids about how people once lived.

Frontier Culture Museum

The Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, Virginia, tells the story of early immigrants and their descendants. How they brought with them traditions, architecture and ideas to this new world. With interactive elements, exhibits, and demonstrations. There are two sections: Old World and America.

The Old World exhibits show rural life and culture in four homelands of early migrants to the American colonies.  The American exhibits show the life these colonists and their descendants created in the colonial back-country, how this life changed over more than a century, and how life in the United States  today is shaped by its frontier past.”

Visiting the Frontier Culture Museum

I would definitely recommend a full day here at the Frontier Culture Museum. There are so many exhibits to see and so much for kids to experience.  

For your convenience, you may bring your own food and drinks and enjoy lunch at one of the many picnic tables on site.  Admission tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for kids age 6-12.

Homeschooling Days

The museum holds homeschooling days in spring and fall, where homeschool families can learn in a frontier classroom, and have dedicated interpreters on hand all day. We happened to plan our visit for one of these days – which was a perfect coincidence!

All of the interpreters were friendly and knowledgeable and made everything feel “real” with their language, clothing, and setting. It was a great learning experience for Payton.

The Frontier Culture Museum runs field days for schools too.

Activities

There are lots of activities to participate in and learn about. See how the the first immigrants used to wash their clothes, ground their grain, and work wood. Get your feet wet in the washing barrels, saw through a tree trunk with a hand saw, and see how you take wool from sheep through to yarn!

This museum is perfect for homeschool kids and field trips for schools; families, and anyone interested in American history.  If you’re traveling near Staunton, Virginia, on an east coast adventure, I would definitely recommend stopping here.
