We were picked up by a clean and spacious town car, since it was just the 3 of us. Because this was an exclusive tour, affording us the entire day with our guide, we could selectively explore additional activities guided by his recommendations. His expertise made the extra cost of the private tour unquestionably worthwhile.

The ancient ruins of Ephesus
Our exploration led us to the historical wonders of Ephesus, encompassing the Temple of Artemis, the House of Virgin Mary, and the city itself, which traces its roots back to the 10th century BC. Bearing traces of Greek and Roman civilizations, Ephesus unfolds with its temples, cobblestone streets, remnants of ancient businesses, and a majestic amphitheater—a captivating portal to the ancient past.
History of Ephesus
Ephesus was founded in the 10th century BC on the coast of Asia Minor. It was a thriving Greek city-state and later the capital of the Roman province of Asia. Ephesus reached its peak during the Roman Empire. However, a decline set in during the 3rd century AD, exacerbated by Gothic invasions, earthquakes, and changing trade routes. By the 8th century, Ephesus lay abandoned.
Today, its well-preserved ruins narrate a story of ancient splendor. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ephesus is perfect for history-lovers, wanting to explore its Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine past. The city’s enduring legacy persists through its architectural remnants, making Ephesus a poignant reminder of the course and flow of ancient civilizations.
The Temple of Artemis
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was a monumental masterpiece dedicated to the goddess Artemis. Built in the 6th century BC, its grandeur included a vast marble structure adorned with intricate sculptures. Sadly, little remains today, but its legacy is a testament to ancient architectural proficiency.
House of Virgin Mary
The House of the Virgin Mary near Ephesus, nestled in the hills, is a revered pilgrimage site believed to be the final residence of Mary, mother of Jesus. A tranquil and sacred place, it draws visitors seeking spiritual connection. This modest stone house was a poignant testament to religious history and devotion.

For our lunch break, our guide led us to the residence of the renowned Osman Can, the artisan behind CAN Carpet. Osman and his team personally craft the famous Turkish rugs. Over a traditional lunch, we delved into discussions about his craft and its artistic nuances.
Post-meal, we observed the intricate rug-making process, allowing Payton to try her hand at it. The authenticity of the experience left a lasting impression, and we even decided to purchase one—a cherished reminder of this unique encounter.
Luxury Brand Factory
Our itinerary included a visit to the Luxury Brand Factory, dedicated to handcrafting leather coats for renowned designers. Payton actively participated in a fashion show, followed by an engaging tour of the facility. The experience was not only enjoyable but also facilitated by the incredible staff.
Payton and I indulged in trying on various coats until we each found the perfect one, culminating in memorable souvenirs from this delightful excursion.
