On our recent cruise on the Celebrity Constellation, we stopped in Cozumel for the day. There are lots of things to do on your port day in Cozumel, from exploring Mayan ruins to water sports, or just relaxing on the beach. Here are some ideas for your one day in Cozumel on a cruise stop.

Beach Day & Snorkeling
Cozumel is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and long white sand beaches, making it ideal for a relaxing beach day and some great snorkeling. Playa Palancar and Paradise Beach are two of the most popular spots for beachgoers.
- Playa Palancar is quieter and has a more local vibe, with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the sun. You can rent chairs and umbrellas or grab a casual meal and drinks from the beachside restaurant.
- Paradise Beach is more developed and family-friendly, with a large pool, restaurant, and access to water inflatables and activities (for a fee), making it a great option for those who want both relaxation and entertainment.
For snorkeling, El Cielo is a favorite. Accessible only by boat, this shallow sandbar is famous for the starfish resting on the seafloor. The clear, waist-deep water makes it easy to float and see the marine life. Tours to El Cielo often include additional stops at coral reef sites for snorkeling.
Alternatively, why not snorkel in a Cenote? Jade Cavern and Cenote is part of Cozumel’s extensive underground river and cave system. We visited it as part of an amazing tour that included lunch and visits to different parts of the island.

Mayan Ruins & Culture
San Gervasio is Cozumel’s most important ancient site, where the Maya honored Ixchel, their goddess of fertility, medicine, and weaving. Women from all over the Yucatán made pilgrimages here for over a thousand years, from the 4th century right up until the Spanish arrived.
Walking through the peaceful jungle paths with helpful signs along the way, it’s a wonderful spot for families to get a real feel for what this place means to the Maya.
The Pueblo del Maíz (or Zona Arqueológica del Cedral) brings Maya traditions to life in the historic town of El Cedral. You can watch corn being ground the old-fashioned way, see how tortillas are made from scratch, and check out local crafts being created. Set in a restored hacienda, this small spot focuses on everyday life rather than just ancient stones.
It pairs nicely with other local activities like tequila tastings and nature walks. Yes, it’s designed for tourists and they’ll try to sell you things, but we had a good time and learned quite a bit.

Adventure & Outdoor Activities
Getting a Jeep rental gives you the freedom to tackle Cozumel’s bumpier roads and hard to reach places like Punta Sur Eco Park – a sprawling 247-acre nature reserve at the island’s southern tip. Don’t worry though, despite what you might hear about rough roads, a regular compact SUV will handle just about everything you’ll want to see. On our trip, the last few miles of the road leading to the Jade Cenote was very rough. The views, once we made it, were definitely worth all of the bumps for sure!
The Atlantis Submarine tour gives you a chance to see Cozumel’s underwater magic without getting wet – perfect if you’ve got kids who aren’t quite ready for snorkeling or if you just prefer staying dry! This real submarine takes about 45 people down over 100 feet into Chankanaab Marine Park for roughly 45 minutes underwater (though you’ll be out for about 2 hours total).
You’ll cruise past colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, stingrays, and even get to see the famous Cozumel Wall plus an old U.S. Navy ship that’s now become an artificial reef. It’s pretty cool seeing all this sea life through the submarine’s big windows while staying nice and comfortable inside.

Food & Shopping
Have lunch at a beachfront restaurant like Coconuts or La Choza for fresh seafood and Mexican cuisine. We had a gorgeous lunch at San Martin Beach, right on the beach along from El Mirador.
This laid-back spot serves up fresh seafood, tacos, and ice-cold drinks literally on the sand. With beach chairs and plenty of shade, it’s the perfect place to recharge after a morning of exploring. The relaxed vibe and gorgeous views make it a family favorite – just what you need when you want good food without any fuss.
Shop for souvenirs in San Miguel, the island’s main town, where you’ll find local crafts, tequila, and silver jewelry.

Tequila Tasting
Tucked away in the charming village of El Cedral, this tequila tasting gives you a tasty peek into local spirits. You’ll try about four different tequilas from “Regalo De Dios”. Included are various ages and flavors, while picking up some basics about how they’re made.
Just so you know, this is definitely geared toward tourists and they’re hoping you’ll buy a bottle or two. Our take? Sip, savor, and learn something new, but don’t feel pressured to purchase anything.
What makes El Cedral special is the setting itself – there’s the historic church and some Mayan ruins mentioned above. Think of it as more of a cultural pit stop than a serious distillery visit, but that’s part of its charm.

Take a tour to experience a combination of activities
You can take a tour that covers many of the things listed here. We love a combo tour on a cruise stop, as it gives you a light taster of lots of things!. Here are some tour options:

- 4 Hour Cozumel Turtle Sanctuary Experience on a Luxury Catamarán
- Cozumel: Private Excursion – MiniVan or Jeep (Your Day, Your Way)
Cruise Stop Guide to Cozumel
We have been to Cozumel a few times during cruises, and have enjoyed different parts of the island each time. A well-crafted tour will give you a taste of everything, or you can pick a morning and afternoon itinerary that concentrates on your favorite activities.
Our favorite thing to do in Cozumel is experiencing the local culture and ancient history. From authentic fajitas and nachos to learning from indigenous guides. Whether you’re a history, nature, or food lover, or all of the above, Cozumel has something unique and exciting to offer.
