A Weekend at Providence Canyon & Florence Marina State Park, Georgia

Providence Canyon State Park is located in southwest Georgia near the small town of Lumpkin, approximately 45 minutes south of Columbus. Alongside the Florence Marina State Park, they make a great pair of parks for a short and relaxing stay surrounded by nature.

The park sits just a few miles from the Alabama state line, and is a perfectly relaxed weekend away from crowds – it definitely won’t be the last time we visit!

The area is mostly rural, with small towns, farmland, forests, and very little commercial development. You should plan ahead for fuel, groceries, and dining options, as services can be limited compared to more heavily visited state park destinations.

Where to stay near Providence Canyon State Park

The campsite at Providence Canyon was being renovated, so we stayed at the Florence Marina State Park. Situated along the shores of Lake Eufaula, the park features a campground with cottages, RV and camping spots, walking trails, fishing opportunities, playgrounds, laundry facilities, and modern bathhouses.

For hotel options, you’ll have to stay in the nearby towns rather than in the parks. Try the Farmhouse Inn Apartments in Georgetown, or the Hampton Inn Eufaula over in Alabama.

Things to do around Florence Marina State Park

Exploring Providence Canyon

Unlike most canyons in the American Southwest, Providence Canyon was created largely through erosion caused by poor farming practices during the 1800s. Over time, deep gullies formed in the soft soil, eventually creating the colorful canyon walls visitors see today.

The result is a striking landscape of orange, pink, red, and purple earth formations that are in contrast to the surrounding forests. While the canyon is smaller than its western counterparts, it offers some of the most unique scenery in Georgia.

Canyon Rim Overlooks

One of the best features of Providence Canyon is that you can enjoy impressive views without undertaking a long hike. Near the entrance and visitor facilities, several overlooks provide panoramic views of the canyon from above.

These easily accessible viewpoints offer excellent photo opportunities and are a great option for those with limited mobility, or anyone wanting to appreciate the landscape before heading onto the trails.

Hiking in Providence Canyon

The canyon trails provide an opportunity to experience the landscape up close. All major trails start from the same trailhead and descend into the canyon floor before branching into various routes.

The initial descent is the steepest section of the hike, but handrails and well-maintained paths make it manageable for most.

Once at the bottom, the terrain becomes relatively flat and easy to navigate, depending on weather conditions of course.

DOGS ALLOWED – We had both our dogs with us and they had a great time (on-leash of course)!

Florence Marina State Park and Lake Eufaula

Florence Marina State Park is a great destination in its own right. Located on Lake Eufaula, it is one of the largest reservoirs in the southeastern United States, and is popular for boating, fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing.

Walking trails and picnic areas provide opportunities to enjoy the lakefront scenery, while sunsets over the water can be particularly beautiful. The relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to spend an afternoon simply enjoying the outdoors.

We had a lovely time here at dusk – sitting by the water and watching the birds and seeing the sky change – stunning!

Dining Near Providence Canyon

You should be aware that dining options in the area are limited due to the park’s remote location. However here are some options for you:

  • The Omaha Brewing Company, located about ten minutes from Florence Marina State Park, offers a family-friendly atmosphere with outdoor seating, live music on select weekends, food trucks, and community events.
  • Ma Pate’s is located in Lumpkin and has a great range of BBQ, sandwiches and dogs.
  • Further afield, down in Georgetown, you have Michelle’s Restaurant – which has all the southern classics you could ask for.

Andersonville National Historic Site

For those heading to or from Providence Canyon, Andersonville National Historic Site makes an excellent addition to the itinerary.

Located about an hour east of the parks, the site preserves the history of Camp Sumter, one of the largest Confederate prisoner-of-war camps during the American Civil War.

Today, you can tour the grounds, explore the National Prisoner of War Museum, and drive through the historic site with self-guided exhibits and audio tours.

As a military family, we always make a point of visiting war memorial sitesc around the world.
