Tucked into the mountains of western North Carolina near the Georgia border, Otto is the kind of place you visit to slow down. It’s small, scenic, and surrounded by forested ridges, winding country roads, and sweeping Appalachian views. A weekend in Otto NC and Clayton GA is about quiet mornings, scenic drives, local farms, and easy outdoor adventures. With nearby hiking trails, waterfalls, and charming mountain towns just a short drive away, Otto makes a peaceful base for a relaxed Blue Ridge escape.
Where to stay near Otto NC
We stayed at large vacation rental via Airbnb It was a 4-bed house, right by a creek, so the boys could fish each morning. The fire-pit was a favourite spot for gatherings in the evenings, and we appreciated the games room and spa!
There are lots of vacation rentals up in the Otto and Highlands area of NC – which we find great for weekend breaks with friends.
If you’re looking for hotels, the Kingwood Resort & Golf Club is a nice option. Or you could try the Quality Inn & Suites Mt Chalet in Clayton.
Things to do around Otto, North Carolina
Located between Franklin, NC and Clayton, GA, Otto is the perfect base location for a weekend getaway or a longer stay. We were in the midst of fabulous restaurants, beautiful wineries, and amazing scenery. It was perfect location for exploring during the day and relaxing and unwinding in the evenings.
Scenic Drives & Mountain Views
Otto is surrounded by quiet mountain roads that make scenic driving one of the easiest and most relaxing activities in the area. Rolling countryside, layered ridgelines, and long-range Appalachian views are common along local backroads and nearby highways.
A drive toward Franklin or Highlands offers changing elevations and sweeping overlooks, particularly during fall foliage season. Traffic is typically light, making it ideal for a leisurely afternoon drive with frequent photo stops.
You can also enjoy cross into northern Georgia for additional mountain views around Clayton.
- Wayah Road & Wayah Bald Lookout Tower (Franklin, NC) – A winding mountain drive through Nantahala National Forest leading to a short walk up to a historic stone tower with panoramic 360-degree views.
- Mountain Waters Scenic Byway (US-64 & NC-28) – A designated scenic route featuring river gorges, mountain vistas, and roadside waterfall stops between Franklin and Highlands.
- Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway & Osage Overlook (near Clayton, GA) – A higher-elevation loop drive with sweeping overlooks across the Chattahoochee National Forest, especially scenic in fall.
- Warwoman Road (Clayton, GA) – A quieter mountain drive following the Chattooga River with scenic pull-offs and picnic spots.
- Highlands Road (US-64) including Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls – A dramatic gorge drive where you can stop at two easy-access waterfalls right off the road. Enjoy the Cullasaja Gorge Scenic Pull-Offs too.
- Black Rock Mountain State Park (Mountain City, GA) – Georgia’s highest state park with scenic overlooks accessible by car and short walking trails.
- Sky Valley Overlook – A scenic pull-off near the North Carolina–Georgia border offering broad valley views.
Waterfalls & Easy Hikes Nearby
Western North Carolina is known for its waterfalls, and Otto is within easy reach of several accessible options.
- Glen Falls – A moderate forest hike with a steady descent to a multi-tiered waterfall. The return hike is uphill but manageable for active visitors.
- Whiteside Mountain Trail – A popular loop hike with some elevation gain leading to dramatic cliffside views over the Nantahala National Forest.
- Secret Falls – A longer but rewarding forest hike combining wooded trails and a waterfall with a natural swimming area at the base.
- High Falls – A relatively easy walk through forest to a series of cascades near the Highlands Biological Station area.
- Bartram Trail (Rabun Bald section) – A more challenging hike option leading to one of the highest peaks in Georgia with expansive Blue Ridge views.
- Tallulah Falls – Tallulah Falls is a historic resort town near Clayton, dating back to the Victorian era, it serves as the entrance to Tallulah Gorge State Park.
Fishing
Otto’s mountain setting also makes it a good base for freshwater fishing. Streams, creeks, and nearby rivers in the region are known for trout, particularly in cooler months.
Head toward waterways near Franklin or into the Nantahala area for public access points.
North Carolina fishing regulations apply, and a valid state fishing license is required. For those new to the area, local outfitters can provide information on seasonal conditions, bait recommendations, and guided fishing trips.
We specifically chose a rental located on a creek so the guys could fish in the early mornings while we enjoyed coffee from the wrap around porch overlooking the creek.
Farm & Gift Stores
Small farm stands and specialty shops are part of the charm of this rural corner of North Carolina. Seasonal produce, homemade jams, baked goods, and local honey can often be found at roadside markets during warmer months.
If you want a gorgeous stop for some tea or coffee and baked goods, Tallulah 1882 is a great spot south of Clayton.
Downtown Clayton
Downtown Clayton is an adorable small town and one of our favorites in North Georgia. There are so many unique shops and restaurants within walking distance.
One of our favorite stores is Wander North Georgia. It is the best place to find unique gifts and things you never knew you needed. And just across the street you will find Friends American Grill. This is a great casual place to grab a drink or have dinner. Make sure to try the fried deviled eggs.
Wineries Near Otto, NC
We have spent years exploring wineries in North Georgia along the North Georgia Wine Trail. Many of these are not far from Otto, NC. Some of our favorites are 12 Spies Vineyards, Tiger Mountain Vineyards and Stonewall Creek Vineyards. All of these are located near Clayton, GA rounding out the perfect weekend line up.
Julep Farms
Julep Farms was our biggest “wow” factor from this trip – it was our first time visiting and it blew us away. We visited for Sunday brunch and it is a must-do when in the area. The food was fabulous, but that was just the beginning – the farm, the animals, the landscape, the gift shop, the coffee shop make this feel more like an experience than just a meal.
Moonrise Distillery
To be honest, Moonrise Distillery is the main reason we continue to return to this area over and over again. This is not just another touristy distillery – Moonrise is an experience in itself.
There are activities going on different nights of the week, food options available, and even a hidden speakeasy! The atmosphere is upscale but relaxed and full of locals as well.
If you are like me and not overly fond of whiskey, then try the cocktail flight – it includes an Old Fashion, Manhattan, Mountain Margarita, Peach Tea, Bourbon Lemonade, and Bloody Mary – all made from Moonrise Distillery bourbon. The best margarita, lemonade and Bloody Mary I have ever tasted. The best part is, they come premixed and can be purchased on site to bring home.
Tip – if you are military or law enforcement, bring your challenge coin with you. These guys support the military 100% and it shows.
A relaxing retreat on the border of North Carolina and Georgia
We love visiting the Clayton area of North Georgia, and Otto, NC is a great place to stay when visiting. You are close to everything but also far enough away from everything to relax and unwind.
If you are looking for a weekend off the grid but also conveniently close to the action, Otto is a great option with so many rentals available. Great for a romantic getaway or a multi generational retreat!
