Wine Tasting in Sardinia: Cruise Excursion to Argiolas Winery

Have you ever had one of those travel experiences where you feel transported, enriched and inspired? The family-run Argiolas Winery delivered this for us, and we are so grateful. We knew we wanted to do a wine tasting in Sardinia, but we decided to do a combined Fregola cooking class at the Argiolas Winery as our cruise excursion from the Cagliari port. It couldn’t have been better.

Argiolas Winery is located approximately 20 miles (or 30 minutes) from the cruise port in Cagliari, and we spent 4 hours immersed in wine, tradition, food and learning. The experience will stay with us for a long, long time.

Each wine is like a tale, a film or a novel: you can taste it anywhere, but discovering its history and the place where it was born is something entirely different.

Argiolas Winery

Argiolas Winery in Serdiana, a Family Affair

The story of this winery is the story of a family. The story began in 1906 when Antonio, the patriarch, was born in Serdiana. He was the first to plant vine rows, to join vineyards together, and to seek quality in winemaking. Over the years, his passion and his vineyards grew and he passed along the tradition to his two sons and then their wives. Today, the winery is run by the third Argiolas generation, Antonio’s grandchildren. From the moment you enter, you can feel the passion, the tradition, and the pride that goes into each and every bottle of wine they produce.

The Winery

While our food was cooking (more on the food later) we were led on a guided tour of the winery and cellars. We learned the history of the family and the wines. We were able to see some of the original equipment used in production many, many years ago.

My favorite part was visiting the underground caves where the barrels are housed. The sweet smell of fermentation filled the air. Our minds were blown at how much of the production takes place in these caves and how cold it was down there. Room after room it went on forever.

There is also a tasting room located in the caves. This is not for the cooking class but for the food and wine pairing tour that is also available. We considered this tour, but our love for cooking classes led us astray. As we toured the caves we passed by a small group enjoying an intimate tasting in the dimly lit caves. When we return, we will definitely add on that experience as well!

Fregola Cooking Class

We chose the Fregola cooking class and wine tasting experience. This began upstairs in the most authentic kitchen we have ever visited. The exposed beams on the ceiling, the stone countertops, and the massive fireplace set the stage for a class we will never forget. We began by learning to make fregola from the sweetest chef born and raised in the area.

Fregola is a type of pasta from Sardinia. It is made from durum wheat semolina and water. Fregola is sometimes called Sardinian couscous. It can be used in cold or hot dishes and has a nutty flavor. The process of making fregola reminded me of my grandmother making homemade biscuits when I was growing up.

To make Fregola, you rub semolina flour and water together in a circular motion to form a round shape. Too dry, add more water. To wet, add more semolina. Needless to say, just like my grandmother’s biscuits, the process is more difficult than it looks. Our group had so much fun in the process thanks to the patience of our chef.

After giving the Fregola our best effort, we moved on to cleaning and cooking the mussels. By the end, we had created an unforgettable meal. Each course was paired with the most delicious wines.

My favorite part of the class was that it was private and only included the six of us who were traveling together. It was intimate, quiet, and very laid back. We enjoyed our meal, our wines, and getting to know our chef and our guide on a more personal level.

As we travel and learn the cultures and customs, the best part is getting to know the people.

The Wine

During our meal, we enjoyed a perfectly paired tasting of the four most popular wines at Argiolas. Starting with prosecco and then moving from the whites to the reds. There was one wine in particular that we wanted to taste that is not normally included but our guide was happily able to provide that one as well.

  • Turriga – A prestigious blend, primarily featuring Cannonau, with Bovale Sardo, Carignano, and Malvasia Nera
  • Costera – A classic Cannonau di Sardegna, known for its rich red fruit flavors
  • Korem – A blend of Bovale Sardo, Carignano, and Cannonau, representing the terroir’s strength
  • Iselis Bianco – Made from Nasco, this white wine is fresh and aromatic
  • Vermentino di Sardegna – A crisp, floral white wine from the Vermentino grape
  • Perdera – A Monica di Sardegna wine, soft and smooth with hints of berries
  • Tagliamare – This sparkling wine is expressive, fruity, immediate, with scents of flowers and fresh fruit, citrus fruits and aromatic herbs.

We also sampled their extra-virgin olive oil and Sapa as part of our meal as well. Before leaving we purchased both, plus cases of wine, which were able to be shipped to us back in the States.

Wine Tasting Cruise Excursions

As a cruise excursion, Argiolas provides an authentic taste of Sardinian hospitality, perfect for those seeking a relaxing, culturally immersive adventure in a stunning Mediterranean setting. We loved the Fregola cooking class, but if you had less time, the wine tasting is just as wonderful.

Wine tasting in Sardinia – the perfect cruise excursion

When we travel we focus on experiences. We are not interested in checking off locations to say we have been there. We long to experience the place. To taste the food, to savor the wines, to learn the history, and to get to know the people.

This experience in Sardinia at Argiolas Winery gave us just that. For 4 hours we immersed ourselves in their lives and left feeling like we had gained something more than just a great meal with wine pairing. Because of this experience, Cagliari and Sardinia will hold a special place in our hearts. We look forward to going back and staying longer!
